FAMILY : Asteraceae

Description

The Sahadevi plant, scientifically known as Vernonia cinerea, is a herbaceous annual or perennial plant that is commonly found in various parts of India and other tropical regions. It typically grows to a height of 30-60 cm and has an upright, branching stem. The leaves of Sahadevi are lance-shaped, serrated, and covered in fine hairs, giving them a slightly grayish-green appearance. The plant produces small, tubular flowers that are purple or pink in color and are clustered in terminal heads.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS
Sahadevi contains several bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and tannins. Vernonioside A and B are two major sesquiterpene lactones found in the plant. These compounds are responsible for some of its medicinal properties. Additionally, Sahadevi contains antioxidants that contribute to its health benefits.

PROPERTIES ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
In Ayurveda, Sahadevi is highly valued for its therapeutic properties. It is classified as having a bitter taste (Rasa), which stimulates the taste buds and promotes digestion. Its cooling nature (Guna) helps pacify excess heat in the body, making it particularly beneficial for individuals with elevated Pitta dosha. Sahadevi exhibits a cold potency (Virya), which means it has a soothing and calming effect on the body. Its post-digestive effect (Vipaka) is also cooling, contributing to its ability to balance and soothe aggravated Pitta.

A relevant shloka from Ayurvedic texts emphasizes Sahadevi’s properties:
“सहदेवी तु कटु तिक्ता शीतोष्णा पित्तकृद्विपाका”
(Sahadevi is bitter and pungent, with a cooling potency, and it balances the Pitta dosha).

These Ayurvedic properties make Sahadevi a valuable herb in Ayurvedic medicine for addressing conditions related to excessive heat, inflammation, and digestive disturbances. It is often used to restore balance and harmony to the body’s internal systems, promoting overall health and well-being.
