Putranjiva is a plant genus of the family Putranjivaceae, first described as a genus in 1826. It is native to Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Japan, southern China, and New Guinea.
Along with Drypetes(of the same family), it contains mustard oils as a chemical defense against herbivores. The ability to produce glucosinolates is believed to have evolved only twice, in the Putranjivaceae and the Brassicales.
Putranjiva Roxburghii nuts are known as Putra-jiva or Putram-jiva in Sanskrit meaning one which makes the child live. It is not only taken internally for promoting healthy progeny but the hard-wrinkled nuts are made into a necklace and worn by children to keep good health. The seeds are mentioned in the Nighantus as being Garbha-kara (productive of impregnation). The stones of the fruit are also prescribed for spermatorrhoea (excessive, involuntary ejaculation), oligospermia (deficiency of sperm cells in the semen) and abnormal vaginal discharges.

Seeds are sweet, acrid, (producing offspring), refringent, conceptive (promotes conception), laxative, anti-inflammatory and diuretic and useful in diseases due to vitiation of Vata and Pitta, syphilis, cold, fever, burning sensation, hyperdipsia (Intense thirst), constipation, inflammations, strangury ( blockage or irritation at the base of the bladder, resulting in severe pain and a strong desire to urinate), azoospermia (no sperm count meaning virtually no sperm in a man’s ejaculate), sterility, swelling, rheumatism.
