Description

Acorus calamus is a perennial, semi-aquatic plant that grows in wetlands and along the edges of ponds and streams It typically reaches a height of 30-100 cm. The leaves are sword-shaped and can grow up to 1-2 cm in width and 60-90 cm in length. The flowers of Vacha are small, greenish-yellow in color, and grow on a spadix.

Chemical Constituents:
Vacha contains a number of chemical constituents, with the most important one being beta-asarone, which is a phenylpropene compound.
Other chemical constituents found in Vacha include alpha-asarone, calamol, camphone, isoshyobunone, acoramone, and more.

Vipaka (Post-digestive taste): Its post-digestive taste is pungent (katu).
Dosha Affinity: Vacha is believed to primarily balance Kapha and Vata doshas. Its heating nature makes it particularly useful for balancing excess Kapha.
